Acupuncture is a traditional treatment method developed in China many years ago. It aims to prevent and treat specific diseases and conditions by inserting very thin needles into certain points on the body. The system aims to restore the balance of Qi (life energy).
What conditions are treated with acupuncture?
Although acupuncture is not the sole treatment option for all diseases, it is highly effective in treating various conditions. Acupuncture can be effective in treating chronic (long-term) pain such as headaches, menstrual cramps, and back, neck, or muscle pain. It can also be used to treat osteoarthritis, facial pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and recurrent sprains and strains. Acupuncture may also improve the functioning of the immune system (the body’s defense system against diseases).
Acupuncture is not a stand-alone treatment for certain conditions like cancer.
What are the types of acupuncture?
Acupuncture is applied in many different ways. Acupuncturists touch the body to find reactive areas and myofascial (muscle) trigger points. Based on the meridian acupuncture theory, the correct points are selected and stimulated with needles to relax problem areas.
Acupuncturists also find and deactivate “trigger points” using an advanced needling technique. Trigger points can be a common cause of painful conditions, and almost everyone has experienced pain and other functional disturbance symptoms at least once in their lives.
What happens during acupuncture treatment?
After discussing your condition, the acupuncture specialist will examine you for reactive areas to determine which points will be used. Acupuncture needles are sterile, pre-packaged, single-use, and very thin. The needles are inserted to various depths and left in place from a few minutes to 20 minutes.
You may need to partially undress during acupuncture treatment, so it is advisable to wear loose clothing. Practice clothing and body hygiene.
