What is Zirconium Dental Veneer?

Atlas University Editorial Team

Dental restorations are divided into two types: metal-supported and metal-free tooth coverings. Zirconium-based teeth, which are used for patients seeking a more aesthetic smile, provide more natural and aesthetic results compared to metal-supported porcelain restorations. Zirconium, a white-colored material, is processed by converting pure zirconium mineral into zirconia ceramic and then used in special ovens.

What are the advantages of Zirconium Dental Restorations?

Zirconium dental restorations have a higher light transmittance compared to metal-supported restorations, which means they do not create darkness in the gums and do not usually cause problems such as dark color reflection from the gum line, commonly seen in porcelain restorations with metal support. Additionally, due to zirconium’s ability to transmit light, the matte appearance caused by metal-supported porcelain restorations is eliminated, resulting in the closest possible resemblance to the original appearance of the teeth. This achieves a healthier, more transparent, and more natural look. Zirconium restorations are also significant for gum health because they are more compatible with the gums, and there is a lower likelihood of gum disease around the zirconium restorations compared to other metal-supported dental restorations.

Zirconium dental restorations are resistant to hot and cold temperatures and do not cause sensitivity. They are an ideal type of dental treatment for patients with allergies to metals as they do not contain any metal. Zirconium minimizes staining caused by smoking or other factors and does not cause changes in taste in the mouth.

Features of Zirconium Dental Restorations:

  • They have a natural appearance and do not look artificial, and they are very durable.
  • They have high resistance against corrosion.
  • They are strong and resistant to oxidation.
  • They have a long lifespan and do not contain any metal.
  • They are semi-translucent, allowing light to pass through, making them the most compatible with natural teeth.
  • Zirconium restorations do not change color, and they have a smooth and glossy porcelain surface, preventing plaque build-up. Therefore, they are not affected by colorants such as coffee, tea, and cigarettes. Their color remains the same as when they are applied.
  • With regular check-ups, they can serve in the mouth for a long time.

What is the process of Zirconium Restorations?

The teeth are slightly reduced in size, and when the gum is brought to a healthy shape, an impression is taken using special measurement materials and customized trays. In the laboratory, a zirconium framework in the most suitable color for the tooth and a porcelain overlay are produced and adjusted to the mouth in a clinical setting. Finally, the restoration is permanently attached to the tooth using special adhesives.

Is Zirconium Dental Crown Treatment Painful?

The cutting of the teeth is done with local anesthesia, and afterwards, a temporary crown matching the tooth color is placed to prevent sensitivity to hot and cold. Occasionally, a mild sensitivity may be felt. The process is completed painlessly with the permanent bonding of the teeth after the fitting trials.

How well does Zirconium Crown Suit the Gum?

Zirconium is a tissue-friendly material. It does not cause gray discoloration of the gums, which is seen with metal-supported prosthetics, and it does not harm the gums. Zirconium-based porcelain crowns have good compatibility with the gums, and the risk of gum disease formation is much lower compared to metal-supported porcelain crowns.

How Long Does Zirconium Dental Crown Treatment Take?

If there is no need for additional treatments such as gum treatment or prosthesis treatment, the procedure can be completed within 1 week. In cases where there is a gum problem, the treatment may take more than 1 week as gum treatment needs to be done first.
